In 1947 while most Americans couldn't own more than a little under five ounces of gold, the US Mint in Philadelphia was striking one pound and four pound gold coins on the British standard for payment to Saudi Arabia for oil concessions, on behalf of Saudi ARAMCO (ARabian AMerican Oil COmpany).
Where'd the gold come from? Is this even the true story of why these got struck? People who have investigated it a lot more than I have do not all reach the same conclusion about the real story behind these gold rounds.
At NGC only five have been graded higher than this, and there are 23 in this grade. These one-pound rounds from 1947 are substantially more scarce than the 1945-46 four-pound rounds. Those have a lot more gold though, of course.
