A well struck and well-centered obverse on this ancient chunk of solid high-purity gold from the Eastern Roman Empire about 1,430 years ago. The noted "scratch" is on the reverse, and can be seen to the left of the cross if turned in the light to catch it
Justinian II had his throne usurped by Leontius, and Leontius had Justinian II's nose slit, and then had him put in a monastery. Better than execution maybe. Justinian later came back and re-took the throne from a second usurper, Tiberius III Apsimar. Then Justinian had coins struck during his second reign, but, this coin is from his first reign.
