One of the two MS-65 graded dinars of this date sharing the "Top Pop" designation at NGC. Caliph al Walid reigned during the conquest of the Iberian peninsula by Islamic armies, starting in AD 711. This dinar was struck just 4 years before that began.
4.25 grams of high-purity gold (actual fineness is not known for this particular specimen, but these early dinars are believed to have been of the same purity as contemporary solidus coins of the Eastern Roman ("Byzantine") Empire).Only 18 in all, including this coin, are graded for this date at NGC.Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, commonly known as al-Walid I, الوليد بن عبد الملك بن مروان , was the sixth Umayyad caliph, ruling from October 705 until his death in 715. He was the eldest son of his predecessor, Caliph Abd al-Malik
He was the second Caliph to strike the gold dinar. Abd al Malik was the first, starting less than 15 years before this coin was struck. He was the first caliph to institute programs for social welfare, aiding the poor and handicapped among the Muslim Arabs of Syria
