Al-Aziz Billah (r. 975-996) was the powerful fifth Fatimid Caliph, succeeding his father al-Mu'izz, who moved the capital to Cairo; Al-Aziz expanded the Fatimid realm into Syria and the Levant, clashing with Byzantines, instituted reforms like formalizing the vizierate, showed tolerance towards Christians and Jews, and began using Turkish mercenaries, leading the Caliphate to its territorial peak before his sudden death preparing for war.
